SEPT 30, OCT 1 & 3  SHOWCASE

For three days in October a select group of actors from Jayson Warner Smith's Strasberg Technique class and Rob Mello's Meisner Technique class will perform 10 scenes from a collection of contemporary works.  Invited to the showcase will be a laundry list of local industry professionals who will attend and bear witness to some of Atlanta's most talented.

I was lucky enough to be invited to participate and I am very excited at the opportunity.   I will be playing the role of Hal in the Award winning play Proof.   My biggest hope is that I don't completely suck, and that someone takes notice of me for their upcoming project.  Maybe then I'll be hired, once again to do what I love.

JUL 10 THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING MELLO

Meisner training was something that I had only heard of through the grapevine from other actors.  It was always considered wacky and somewhat mushy from the rest of "the method" community that I used to hang with in San Diego.   Not many people spoke highly of it when it was referred to in Southern California.  At least, that was my experience in Southern California.  But my understanding of the technique would all soon change when I decided to enroll in Rob Mello's Meisner Technique class in Decatur, GA.  Four months later, and approximately nintety-six hours of dedicated work to the technique proved to be a turning point in my acting craft.  This new exposure allowed me to feel a deeper lever of art and have a relationship to the craft in a whole new way.  I was changed.

The Meisner technique was meant for an actor to comprehend themselves at a core level by which they could approach the work using themselves more fully and honestly.  Instead of creating from my imagination and finding how that creation would align with aspects of myself to serve the character and the script, I was now working backwards.  Instead I was using myself at a starting point for the creation, and trusting that I would arrive at a meeting place within my imagination to agreeably serve the character and the script and "trust that it was enough".   This allowed me a new sense of confidence and freedom.  A confidence that as an actor I've always struggle to find and keep.  In addition, Rob would position us in a way to allow a deeper expression of the art to come alive.   He was always encouraging us to ask the question-  "Where is your character's pain?"....or ...."What is that which is universal in your choice to tell this story?".

It was questions like these that begin to expand my imagination and inspire me to challenge my own desire and need to express truth.  A deeper and more interesting truth.

JUNE 23 IN AWE OF THE CAPITAL

On a recent visit to Washington, DC, I was fortunate enough to be able to visit our nation's most prized home- The White House.  It was truly an honor to see first hand where some of the nation's most honorable men and women made history with formal dinners, press conferences, grand balls, the hosting of foreign dignitaries, and famous presidential addresses that would live in the people's hearts forever.  My favorite room was the East Room where an imposing painting of George Washington overlooked the room as his spirit permeated the premises.  The largest room in the White House, the East Room, has had multiple functions over the years and has been the center for many historical gatherings.

In addition to my White House visit, I also found myself emotional on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, feeling reverent while standing next to the Lee House at Arlington, spiritual and uplifted overlooking the city from the top of the National Cathedral, and patriotic and proud when the breeze brushed my face at the Washington monument on that warm June afternoon.

But, the most overwhelmed I felt during the whole trip, was my time spent at the battlefield in Gettysburg, PA.  Overlooking a vast field in the Pennsylvania farmland that once hosted a great battle between two forces opposed by a way of life and tradition, brought much sadness to my heart.  To know that lives were lost, and that so many American families would never see their loved ones again was a very hard thought to swallow indeed.  It pained me to think of those young men, and what they must have went through those three hot days in August of !863.

And yet, in a way, I was grateful.  Grateful to know that my freedom was preserved in time through their sacrifice.  And I will forever be grateful to them and their service.
